NSW:Window smashed after driver resists arrest

A Sydney P-plater allegedly failed to stop at a random breath test, wound up his car
windows, locked all the doors and verbally abused officers when they pulled him over this
morning.

Police broke the 27-year-old's window and removed him from the driver's seat of his
car as it sat at an intersection near Pittwater Road, in North Ryde.

He's been charged and granted bail and is due to appear in Ryde Local Court later this month.

FED:Christmas Is survivors get specialist care

Eds: reissuing to amend headline

CANBERRA, Dec 19 AAP - Survivors of last week's fatal Christmas Island boat accident
are receiving specialist care as they come to grips with the tragedy, immigration officials
say.

Thirty people, including 13 men, nine women, four children and four babies, perished
when their wooden boat struck rocks and broke apart in heavy seas early on Wednesday morning.

Immigration Department spokesman Peter Richards said the agency was focused on caring
for the accident's 42 survivors.

"It's a very difficult time for the survivors but for also other people within the
detention facilities," he told reporters on Christmas Island on Sunday.

"There are a number that we've identified, for example, that have relatives amongst
this group (of deceased)."

Mr Richards said five of the six survivors taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment
had been discharged and were now in immigration detention in Western Australia.

A private memorial service organised by representatives from the survivors group, in
conjunction with a local Christmas Island imam, will take place later this afternoon.

Australian Federal Police Superintendent Gavan Ryan said the process of interviewing
survivors was under way.

"Part of that process is to take survivors to the hospital to visually identify the
deceased to comply with West Australian coroner standards," he said, adding that 15 people
had been formally identified so far.

QLD:Bore water ban lifted after latest tests

QLD:Bore water ban lifted after latest tests

BRISBANE, Aug 11 AAP - Landholders near a Queensland underground gas project have been
told they can resume using bore water after new tests showed it was safe.

Residents within a 2km radius of Cougar Energy's trial underground coal gasification
plant near Kingaroy, north-west of Brisbane, were last month banned from using bore water.

The restriction, which was lifted on Wednesday, was imposed after tests found traces
of benzene and toluene in groundwater at the site and a neighbouring property.

Despite the latest tests showing there's no issue with water quality in local bores,
Cougar will not be allowed to resume burning underground coal until further notice, the
Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) said on Wednesday.

"While the latest tests show low levels of benzene and toluene at the Cougar Energy
plant itself, these are below Australian Drinking Water Guideline standards and only trace
levels of toluene can be detected at some neighbouring bores," the department's director-general
John Bradley said in a statement.

Mr Bradley said DERM scientists considered the groundwater quality at neighbouring
bores comparable to water quality shown in tests undertaken before the gas plant began
operations.

Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones said the bans on Cougar's activities
would remain in place until an environmental evaluation was completed.

"We will be seeking advice from the expert scientific panel which is being established
to investigate underground coal gasification at all three trials across Queensland," Ms
Jones told reporters in Brisbane.

"My understanding is that we should have answers within a month to two months.

"I will not pre-empt the decision of the environmental evaluation. We are taking a
precautionary approach when it comes to making sure this technology is safe."

Biosecurity Queensland has also lifted precautions that had applied to cattle within
the 2km zone.

Landholders had previously been told to restrict cattle's access to groundwater for
48 hours prior to slaughter.

Natural Resources Minister Stephen Robertson said some landowners might still be hesitant
to use the water.

"Inevitably, some people will never be satisfied, and understandably, their confidence
has taken a hit over the last couple of months," Mr Robertson told reporters in Brisbane.

"But the reality is in some cases you can't always reach 100 per cent in terms of satisfaction
rates."

Meanwhile, Mr Bradley said water quality tests near another underground coal gasification
plant near Dalby showed there were no implications for stock watering.

He said the latest samples from Kogan Creek did not detect the presence of mercury,
and levels of heavy metals such as iron and aluminium and hydrocarbons did not exceed
stock watering standards.

"The results of water quality tests from Kogan Creek near Carbon Energy's underground
coal gasification plant near Dalby has not detected any contamination which could cause
a risk to humans, plants or animal," Mr Bradley said.

Vic: Police frustrated with Easter deaths as toll climbs to 3

By Catherine Best

MELBOURNE, April 6 AAP - Police have blasted Victorian drivers after three people died
and three others were critically injured in a horrific start to Easter on the state's
roads.

Two young men are fighting for their lives after the Commodore in which police believe
they were racing another car at speeds in excess of 160km/h left the road and ploughed
into a tree in Melbourne's south-east early today.

In another accident, a 63-year-old Melbourne man died in a head-on crash at Lake Boga,
just south of Swan Hill, in the state's north, about 10.50am (AEST) today.

His two passengers, women aged 66 and 33, were taken to the Swan Hill Hospital with
non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 26-year-old Corowa woman, was trapped in the wreckage
for more than an hour before being airlifted to The Alfred hospital with critical chest
injuries. Her condition was described as stable at the hospital today.

A cyclist and a motorist died in separate accidents yesterday.

One young man in his late teens and another in his early 20s were critically injured
when their Holden Commodore clipped another vehicle on the South Gippsland Freeway at
Hampton Park, careered off the road, and smashed into a tree about 4am (AEST) today.

The impact ripped the car's front wheels off and catapulted the engine several metres
from the wreckage.

Police say the pair were alleged to have been travelling at speeds of more than 160km/h
and may have been racing another vehicle.

Acting Inspector Jeff Smith said he was staggered by the behaviour of drivers, despite
repeated pleas by police for them to take care.

"I just can't understand people who don't take on board what's said at this time of
the year," he told reporters.

"I mean traditionally it's a time of the year where we battle to get the message through
to people that okay, it's a school holiday, don't make it your last holiday.

"It is so frustrating with the amount of press that's gone out, with the amount of
exposure to the road toll that's happened in the last couple of weeks that people just
don't take it on board and don't react to it. It just staggers me sometimes."

A 51-year-old male cyclist died in a collision with a truck on Blackburn Road, in suburban
Clayton about 11.15am yesterday.

Some six hours later, a 31-year-old man died when the car he was driving struck a tree
and rolled on an unsealed road at Invergordon, near Shepparton.

Victoria's Easter toll of three fatalities occurred in less than 48 hours from midnight
on Wednesday, the same toll recorded over the five days of Easter last year.

WA: Activist calls for more direct action against Iraq war

By Jane Hammond

PERTH, April 30 AAP - A controversial Australian anti-war activist due to stand trial
in Ireland in July for damaging a US warplane has called for more direct action from Australians
opposed to the war in Iraq.

In Perth to attend a series of speaking engagements, Ciaron O'Reilly said it was time
peace activists in Australia took a stronger stand to oppose the war.

He said there was currently more anti-war sentiment coming from the military than from
the peace movement and activists needed to use non-violent resistance to end Australia's
role in the Iraq war.

Mr O'Reilly, 45, was born and raised in Brisbane but now lives in Ireland, where he
works for a homeless people's shelter.

On February 3, 2003, he was arrested with four others after disabling a US warplane
at a civilian hangar in Ireland.

The group, known as the Pitstop Ploughshares, used hammers and a garden tool to dent
the aircraft, and stayed in the hangar to pray beside the plane until they were arrested.

Mr O'Reilly is due to face trail in Dublin on July 5 on charges of wilful damage, and
if convicted faces up to 10 years jail.

He has previously spent time in jail in Darwin for damaging uranium mining equipment
at Jabiluka in 1998 and in the US for damaging a B52 bomber in 1991.

A member of a radical Catholic organisation that advocates non-violent resistance,
Mr O'Reilly uses the Bible to justify his civil disobedience and destruction of military
property.

"The actions in damaging the warplane were inspired by the prophecies in Isaiah to
change swords into ploughshares," he said.

"I would encourage Australians to non-violently resist their government's contribution
to this war."

He called on Australians opposed to the war to up the ante and undertake non-violent
resistance actions at Pine Gap and at next year's massive military exercise, Operation
Talisman, at Rockhampton in Queensland.

"The war is getting worse, it is escalating and expanding, it is not just going to
go away, people have to proactively stop it," Mr O'Reilly said.

"Most of the responses I have had talking about these things at Catholic schools and
with peace groups in Australia have been positive."

Vic: Safeway ruling serves as warning to others

MELBOURNE, Feb 1 AAP - An $8.9 million fine imposed on supermarket giant Safeway for
retail misbehaviour would serve as a warning to others, Treasurer Peter Costello said
today.

Mr Costello said the fine, imposed by the Federal Court yesterday after the chain was
prosecuted for price-fixing and misusing its market power, was a win for consumers.

He said it would keep prices down by ensuring market competition.

"This illustrates that business, whether you're small or big ... cannot abuse its power
in the market to damage competition," Mr Costello told ABC Radio.

"If you have power in the market under Australian law you cannot set out to injure
your competitors.

"Safeway was found by the Federal Court to have done that - the biggest fine I believe
in trade practices history, possibly in corporate history ... if anybody thinks that the
law doesn't have teeth go and read this case.

"The (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) ACCC is well funded to prosecute
abuse of market power and this is a classic case where it took on a big business and succeeded."

Safeway is part of the Woolworths group. In some stores it had ceased taking bread
from various manufacturers while the particular brand was being discounted by competitors.

THE CAMERA THAT NEVER LIES BEATS THUGS IN DISGUISE; EXCLUSIVE: `X-ray' vision reveals real face of soccer hooligans.(News)

A REVOLUTIONARY camera which strips criminals of their disguises will be turned on soccer thugs during the Euro 2000 championships.

The pounds 25,000 Profile camera can penetrates sunglasses, masks and even balaclavas to expose villains' true faces.

A computer then maps the skull digitally by measuring the distance between the ears and eyes.

It then takes just seconds to look for a match on a huge database of known villains.

The camera will allow police officers to track down troublemakers remotely. It could even replace plain-clothes police "spotters" who follow thugs on foot.

The police chief in charge of tackling English hooligans at Euro 2000 confirmed that the camera would play a front-line role in the war on soccer yobs.

Chief Superintendent Eddie Curtis, from Nottinghamshire police, said: "We will be experimenting with the system at the Euro 2000 championships.

"The system could be used anywhere football hooligans gather, including airports and bars. The equipment is very accurate and has a lot of potential in helping police football matches and major tournaments."

Mr Curtis, who oversaw British policing during the 1998 World Cup, has already held talks with security chiefs in Belgium and Holland, where the tournament is being held, about installing the system inside stadiums.

The cameras are mounted on poles or hand-held.

Officials organising Euro 2000 are braced for a surge of violence among hard-core hooligans this summer.

The crunch clash between England and Germany in Belgium on June 17 has been given a "high-risk" rating by police. This week police chiefs from the National Criminal Intelligence Service will meet security chiefs in Amsterdam to discuss the latest moves by organised gangs preparing for violence at the championships.

Home Office officials are also discussing the possibility of introducing the system after a successful trial in the Thames Valley area last year.

During the pilot scheme the computer led directly to 28 convictions for theft.

Detective Chief Inspector John Leicester-Finch, who oversaw the trial, said: "Profile has been a valuable tool in the fight against crime."

The system was developed by Zeda ABM of Nottingham. Gary Wood, the company's managing director, said: "Profile can make a real difference to crime fighting in the UK. It can identify people in disguise or even when they are 30 years older. It is a real breakthrough.

"There is no existing system in the world that does what it can do."

Last season the number of arrests at football matches rose for the first time in six years.

A total of 3,341 spectators were held, up from 3,307 the season before.

The rise sparked fears that thugs were using mobile phones and the Internet to organise clashes with rival fans.

Thugs from Cardiff City and Millwall used the Internet last year to stage a city centre punch-up.

Hats off as hosts crumble.

Andrew Strauss has warned that Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott's final-day heroics don't mean England can rest on their laurels going into the second Ashes clash.

The tourists travel to Adelaide today ahead of Friday's second Test having made Australia toil for two days at the Gabba, with Strauss, Cook and Trott all scoring centuries to snatch a draw from what had seemed like, after day three, certain defeat.

It was the first time since 1924 that England's top three had each reached their tons in the same innings. And after Mike Hussey and Brad Haddin had helped the hosts eclipse England's opening day efforts of 260 all out, they have left Ricky Ponting with plenty of questions to answer in the next couple of days.

Cook's unbeaten 235 - his first double-hundred in first-class or Test cricket - and Trott's 135 not out were majestic marks of defiance from a side that refused to roll over.

But Strauss, while optimistic about the rest of the series, has been quick to bring his titan troops back down to earth.

"Everyone talks about how important the first Test is against Australia in Brisbane, so to get through that unscathed from the position we were in is a great effort," he said. "We've got a lot of belief we can go on and win the series from here.

"We'll have a spring in our step going to Adelaide - but we have to transfer that to the pitch.

"It's all very well strutting about in the hotel lobby feeling good about yourself. "You need to make sure that turns into

runs and wickets."

The England skipper had led his side's fightback with a stubborn 110 on the fourth day, he and Cook arriving at the crease needing to eat into the tourists' 221-run, first-innings deficit.

However, Strauss insisted they'll take just as much from the opening day.

"The first day of an Ashes series is hard work mentally, and we did well to come back from losing a wicket in the first over," he said.

"Ian Bell played exceptionally well; Cooky played well. But Peter Siddle knocked the stuffing out of us with his hat-trick.

"We did some very good things with the ball - some of our bowlers weren't rewarded for quite how well they bowled.

"We were in a pretty dire position after day three, so it speaks volumes."

It was another toothless effort from the Aussie attack after England finally declared their second innings on an unbelievable 517 for one, and although Ponting admitted after the game that he felt he had "exhausted every option" it hasn't stopped him from drafting pacemen Doug Bollinger and Ryan Harris into the squad for the second Test.

The writing's on the wall for Mitchell Johnson in particular after he finished the match with none for 170, but the Baggy Green skipper declared that nobody in his bowling line-up is safe.

"500 for one is a pretty demeaning scorecard, isn't it?" Ponting said.

"No doubt that we've got a lot of improvement to do with our bowling group. None of our bowlers were at their best. We have to work out which is the best make-up to take 20 wickets.

"I don't think anyone's certain."
